On the '94, the sensor/sender for the gauge is in the back of the head (drivers side toward the firewall). This sender affects only the gauge.

The sensor (CTS) mounted in the thermostat housing provides temperature information to the ECU/computer to control various engine functions. the status of this sensor has no effect on the gauge.

90 was the last year for ECU, PCM for OBDI and on. Some year close there the gauge/light sender moved from the left rear of the head to the T-Stat housing. So not sure if it was on, or before 94. If you DO have a sender on the rear of the head, that's it!

'93 still has the separate sensor/sender and I believe '94 does but I can't swear to that. If nothing happened with the gauge when you unplugged the CTS in the thermostat, then you almost certainly have the separate sender in the head.
