High Vs. Low pinion

Why? Being new to off roading, I'm not quite sure I understand the benefit of one vs. the other. I would assume that for the avg. (not necessarily hard core) off roader it wouldn't make that much of a difference. Am I wrong? Is it day and night?
in a front application high pinion is stronger
in a rear application low pinion is stronger
high pinion is higher clearance
high pinion is less prone to driveshaft vibrations
low pinion has more gearing options (generally)
