Default High Vs. Low pinion

Why? Being new to off roading, I'm not quite sure I understand the benefit of one vs. the other. I would assume that for the avg. (not necessarily hard core) off roader it wouldn't make that much of a difference. Am I wrong? Is it day and night?

Read the recent thread "two jeeps to buy... you decide" there is an explanation of the difference.

in a front application high pinion is stronger

in a rear application low pinion is stronger

high pinion is higher clearance

high pinion is less prone to driveshaft vibrations

low pinion has more gearing options (generally)
