OK. Just that it would bind if they where different. And yea^. Lots of rigs will stay a little stuck in 4WD until you back up a bit.

Especially if it's binding.

I have a NP242. I had the same issues. I brought it to the dealer because I got tired of banging my head against the wall. After they went through everything and found nothing wrong they told me to make sure my front wheels were straight and drive in reverse for a few feet. The owners manual states "Delayed shifts into or out of 4-wheel drive may be experienced due to uneven tire wear, low tire pressure, excessive vehicle loading, or cold temperatures". Hope this helps.

Many thanks for that. What you say does make good sense. It sounds as though full time 4wd is not engaging then it's getting stuck in part time until I reverse.

Hi again guys! I have just been reading up in a worship manual how to adjust the shift linkage on the transfer case.

Would you expect this to cure the issue with part time 4wd being engaged instead of full time or do you think the problem is in the case?

Thanks again

Lots here know the 4WD business better than I. I was just thinking that if something where to bind to the point of giving out, that might be it, (TC). I mean like, take it on the freeway in part time. Idk what would happen. You might want to check the fluid. Maybe start with that and the linkage.

Yes , just as dflinstone suggested , verify linkage adjustment, and chec/change fliud first. I my exp these cases are pretty durable and don't easily fail....

Hi Guys,

I have spent some time looking at this today. The transfer box does appear to be getting stuck in part time 4wd when shifting from 2wd to full time 4wd. Reversing up a few yards remedies this each time, so I can just live with that no problem!

As recommend I checked the linkage and all feels and appears to be solid. I'm loathed to fiddled with it, as I have read a few cases on the forum where further problems have occurred as a result, so just greased all the joints.

I also checked TC fluid level and it did take more, about third of a pint. I noticed there did appear to be some fresh fluid/oil covering the shift mechanism, where it enters the TC body so there must be a small leak at this point.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? Are the seals at this point easy to change or will this just open a massive can of worms and expense?

Many thanks

Somebody correct me if I'm mistaken. I think the nomenclature is misleading. "Part time" is the bad-*** 4WD to use in mud and snow. Because front and rear are locked at the TC, it will bind, hop, and feel pretty bad if at least one wheel can't just slip/slide. In part time, you would need to loose traction on both one front, and one rear wheel to stop moving.

Full time 4WD will drive all four wheels, but if only one looses traction, you can come to a stop and all your power will only spin that one wheel, since it's not locked at the TC.

""Today I put it into 4wd mode due to icy conditions. After about 10 miles of mixed driving I found the front wheels started to bind really badly and skiding, when the wheels turn on full lock.""

?????????????????????? You had 10 miles if ice in the UK? I mean you get my question. Are you sure it's not working just fine?

Hi,

Yes full time allows the front & rear Tp move at different speeds whilst part time lock them together. This is what was causing my problem last week as the TC was sticking in part time and not engaging full time.

It was recommended to check the linkage and fluid level, which I did today. The fluid level has now been topped up, but I noticed a small leak where the shift linkage enters the TC. I was asking how easy or difficult this would be to fix?

Thanks
