I've posted a thread a long time ago talking about this and asking opinions, problem is I don't have access to an arc welder right now.


So anyways, I have a rust hole just behind the right rear wheel on the lower quarter panel. The hole is about 4 1/2 inches long and 2 inches tall. I found that there is still some good metal to attach a new piece of sheet metal to so i'm going to start cutting out the rust for prep. Since I can't use an arc welder to bond the two pieces of metal can I just use a pop rivet gun? I was planning on just taking some silicone caulk, running a line of that all around the edges of the metal, then putting the metal in place, and putting rivets in. Would that work? I was also planning on taking some bondo and going over the rivets and metal so it looks like new again....


Tell me your opinion of what you would do. I need your suggestions before I go in my garage and do this! Thanks in Advance!

yes that will be fine... if its in a place thats you cant really see... skip the bondo.. just rivit it put some seam sealer... or even just good calk around it and then undercoat it...

That's exactly what I was thinking about doing for the inside part of it (facing the fuel tank). The guy at the car paint supply place told me to just take some Great Stuff and spray the foam inside the hollow space, then seal it up with the new metal, I don't know if it's a good idea though, wouldn't that be a magnet for moisture?

you should make the panel out of diamond plate it will look good and be functional do all along the rockers on both sides. Make it your self or buy a kit they sell them in all the magazines.

If your talking about below the body line on the rear quarter the best thing to to is a cut and fold. Many write-ups on and gets rid of rust all together and looks good when done. Do not need a welder either.
