Help! range selection problem

Help! range selection problem
I'm having trouble changing ranges! Since buying the xj yesterday it has been in 4wd full time due to all the snow. Tried 2wd today in town and there was more tansmission noise and wheel skip in corners (luckily moving very slowly).
4wd part time seems really hard to find, jeep seems to prefer part time to all others.
What is likely to be problem? should I just dump it back on the forecourt and get the money back?
