Help please. Hood release handle/cable broke off in my hand. What can I do?
88 Cherokee.
So I went to go open my hood to install my new battery. We've had some frigid subzero day here so the hood was a little froze. I gave the handle a harder tug and then it happened. The hood popped up just as the handle popped off in my hand. Now I'm thankful that atleast the hood popped so I changed my battery and now I'm good to go there. Now I just have no way of getting my hood open again. The handle broke right at the cable. I included a picture for reference. Is there anything I can do for now short of buying a whole new handle/cable assembly? As I said before, it's damn cold and I don't have a heated garage so the idea of being out there and installing this cable (and I'm not a super mechanically adept person but I can hold my own on the simpler things, just takes me a bit longer than some) isn't very appealing right now until it warms up. Really would like to get this darn thing open so that I can put in my new TPS.
Any ideas? Thanks, guys!

I can't get that stupid handle bracket off. the two screws holding it in are like, frozen in place. So if I just cut the cable right behind it and try and peel back some of the black casing to expose the cable it should work with vice grips?

This happened to me, cut back some of the rubber coating around the cable, then use a pair of pliers or vice grips to "pull" the cable, while using the other had to hold the cable for support. It will pop your hood, I have to do this every time now.

So between a hacksaw and a pair of wireclippers I managed to sever the cable and strip it back so that I could pull the wire and pop the hood. Will work great until I put it a new cable in. Also, the new TPS completely cleared up the nasty shifting issue I was having. Woo!

Ya, apparently it's common for these to go bad and when they do they create some odd tranny issues due their relationship with the TCU and some such. Just glad I know now that something isn't wrong with my transmission. Hardest part was adjusting it to as close to a .830v ratio between the input and output voltage with a multimeter. I got a .813. Close enough cuz it works great now.

hey blinkbears I have a hood cable assembly still in the plastic. if you want it i could meet up with you at CVTC. I thought mine was busted so i bought it from a buddy but it ended up only needing some gentle yanking and a generous coating of lubricant. he bought a new one already so I am stuck with it.

Same thing happened to me. After using the vise grip method mentioned above to get it open I went the cheap route and installed hood pins. Pretty simple and only cost me 9 bucks. Plus i think it's pretty unique and looks awesome.
