Sounds like either A) Your belt is wore out, or B) You have grease or oil on your pulleys somewhere.

Since your belt was coming off the pulleys, it is possibly stretched and needs replaced.

Baby powder will get rid of the squeak but its a temporary fix. Dont use belt conditioner its snake oil!!! It makes it worse so you want to put more on.

Default tension

you might also want to check the tension on the belt. when I changed my I squealed like crazy on the way to the auto parts store. (I even saw a mad hot chick driving a XJ exactly like mine, and all she did was laugh. )

mine would go really bad when I stepped on the gas and sometimes it would stop while I was going until I stopped and started out again.

well I know a hill by my house. Just leave the title and keys in it also. ha ha. you have to adjust the Idler tensioner. there should be a layout on your jeep or on line of how to do it. I thought mine was tight but it needed to be tighter and still does. you can try that to see if it works.

Always remember there is two main reasons a belt squeaks. Improper tension and Improper Alignment. Easier typed than fixed but if the two of them are correct even a cracked or frayed belt will be quiet. Cracked or frayed should be replaced asap anyway, of course.

I'm not sure how the first gen cherokee belt routing and adjuster is set up. I thought mine was tight but it wasn't tight enough and also on mine you have to loosen the idle tensioner pully first and then the adjustment screw

You need a new belt or one of your pullies bearings may be shot. If your belt is cracking or ripping to the point where you can see the metal holding it together on the inside its time for a new belt. Also for a temporary fix hit the inside of the belt with a quick shot of PB Blaster. It'll quite it down for awhile but in no means is it a fix.
