Help! No Start, No Crank, No Power
So been troubleshooting for past couple of days to no avail. Driving 87 4.0 5 speed and it died randomly. No gauges, radio, no power anywhere.
Things I've tested:
-Battery:12.7v
-Starter solenoid: 12v from batt to top post but wont close contacts to send power to starter, cuz no power coming from ignition wire.
-Grounds: Batt to engine ground and engine to chassis good
-Ignition switch/Tumbler: Both work kind of (explain later)
-Fuses: EGR and few others were blown that had nothing to do with anything
So my jeep has been molested a lot over its 30 years of life. 5.5 circuit breaker broke and PO wired 2 switches connected straight to the wiper motor, one for high and one for low. Radio also has wire going to one of slots in the fuse block more on that.
Went to tow the jeep to friends garage to work on it due to weather not cooperating, it was raining and I needed wipers so I had the idea to splice into the wiper motor switch as a temporary solution for the trip with a spare battery I had. as soon as I complete the circuit ALL gauges and radio come to life and I can here the fuel pump priming. So I give it a shot and try turning it over. Nothing. As if I had bypassed the ignition switch and tumbler all together and power had gone straight to the fuse block. I decide to jump the starter with a screwdriver and get her started, excited me jumps into the driver's seat and press the clutch and it died as soon as my foot pushes the pedal. Same result the next two times.
The tumbler is all mechanical as far as I can tell, it pushes a rod which slides the ignition switch into positons RUN ACC and OFF of course. So I try the "bypass" with the secondary battery and test the connectors coming off the ignition switch and the brown (accessory power for all accessories) has power and the yellow (power for fuel pump relay, Ignition control module, and ecm) which only gets power if the switch does.
Now the radio wire is weird and throwing me off. The red wire coming off the radio is accessory which I think means it turns on when the car is in accessory mode has contant power going to it but it never is on without my "bypass". And the constant 12v wire to the radio has no power.
In all I'm stumped, thought it was the ignition wire but the ignition switch is good in a way I think. Is the fuse block powered by anything? Could this just be the fuse block isn't getting power to supply everything? Anything helps! Ive done a lot of research and I'm coming up with nothing.
