Inside the door, behind the handle plunger, is a brass-looking lever. It is held in position by a spring and a pin. The spring broke, is there anywhere I can order one? Does anyone know what type of spring this is? Has anyone ever replaced it? Is it as horrible as it looks?

pics would help us know exactlly what spring you mean Kelly. Hardware stores sell a good selection of springs. Bring in the broken spring and compare.
