I have a 93 cherokee 3 inch lift and there is about 3 inches of play with the steering wheel.. wondering if anyone can help me out with suggestions to tighten it up! writups instructions? anything will help

You need to get under there and observe all the steering linkage pivot points for slop while someone wiggles/turns the steering wheel back and forth from left to right. Also check the steering box attachment bolts for movement.
If nothing obvious is found your steering box may need adjusting. JMO

Let's see here you posted this on a sunday at 12:20 am and you expect to get immediate feedback?? Weekends can be slow around here..

Anyways since you didn't search the site and there are tons of threads covering this I'll give you the gist..

Basically there is an adjuster screw on your steering box you can use to tight the steering gear box. Although with 3" of play I'd lean towards a new one. On top of the gear box there is an allen screw held in place by a lock nut. You can adjust this by slight turns and when I say slight I mean slight.

 

ive searched and read that in another thread.. but the problem is i dont know where the steering box is located.. or i would try that.

 

The steering box is at the bottom of the steering column.
I'd check out the complete steering as mentioned first before assuming it's a bad box. JMO

Not trying to be mean but if you dont know where the steering box is you better have someone look at it. adjusting the box is not a simple thing and you could cause yourself more problems.

what should i mainly look at? the tie rod? trackbar? bushings? anything else..

 

this is the first jeep ive ever owned.. i work on cars all the time im just not familiar with the layout.. i do all the work to my evo. and friends cars.. i could swap/built an engine but i dont know what the steering box looks like lol yea i know... but whats hard about loosin a lock nut then turning a allen bolt quater turns/ small amounts at a time?????

I tightednd mine up and it made a world of difference in keeping it on the road, still have sloppy steering but its better. I feel ya man I'm used to dsm's bmws nissans ect. and this jeep is weird to me, but I still knew where the steering box was :P

 

left side of engine compartment ( left if you are sitting in the drivers seat) right under left side of radiator has couple lines going to it and a shaft coming out the back with a little joint on it going into the cab. make sure to check around the bolt holes to see if the body is cracked. There is a technical service bulletin that tells you to take the radiator out to check for cracks and weld them if it broken. have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth while you look for cracks and check all tie-rods and track bar. Also make sure the pitman arm nut is tight. hope this helps. Good luck.
