Awesome references machinisttx thank you! Also what would you recommend using your clean out the old alternator? I don't know if brake cleaner would be too corrosive or not enough to remove all the old dirt.

If you're just talking about cleaning the outer aluminum housing, it doesn't really matter what you use as long as it's not corrosive. You'll need to be careful of anything you use on the rotor and stator though...don't want to melt the protective lacquer/enamel off of the windings.

If you decide to do a full rebuild, including bearings, then be sure to support the housing around the bearing when pressing them in/out. If you don't, it's possible to crack the housing.
