Pull dash and remove heater Box. Its a 9 hour job by the book but took me 4 of hard work. Also a friend to help is a good idea. I didnt pull the dash completly out just flipped it up and slid the box out then changed core out of truck. Look on youtube I looked up one for a zj there before. Im sure there is one for an xj

i had a radiator shop do some other work on cooling sys .. 1990 xj
he attached a pressurized purge system to heater core .. flushed it .. it gets super hot in cab now .. too hot .. check your heater valve assy too .. mine broke in 1/2, so I mcgyvered it .. that caused cooling systems nitemares til fixed
look into that 1st .. unless core is leaking ,, replacing = pita
that heater never worked either .. i had it 4 years by that point .. yours could be fixable .. with shop flush .. call some smaller shops if possible .. i did, a random call saved me tons of time & $

You don't have to remove the entire dash ---- Only the lower portion of the dash, (ie) lower dash trim, and the removal of the lower bolts that support the dash at the kick panels. Although not as easy as replacing a fuse, with a chiltons, Haynes, clymers, or FSM of your choice, the job is fairly easily accomplished in an afternoon of minimal verbal abuse.
