A week ago I noticed the 02 sensor wire harness had made contact at the first exhaust tube, and then again a bit further down along the down pipe, so all the insulation had melted off of the four wires. So I spliced in a replacement section of harness from the local bone yard. I made sure to use a new piece of flame-retardant automotive wire conduit. But it too has already started to melt from the exhaust pipe. I'm not seeing anyway of re-routing the wire harness. Would a section of high-temp water hose hold up to the pipe heat and work as a conduit for the wiring? Or should I use some header-wrap or muffler tape on the exhaust instead? I'm hoping to resolve this issue without going through much trial-and-error because I just ordered a new 02 sensor and will be installing that in a few days. Thanks for any advice!

 

What about using some plug wire heat sheild insulation or something similar, or bend up some alumiunum sheeting for a heat sheild?

 

I know this should have been a basic no-brainer but I appreciate your quick reply. This morning I temporarily wrapped the harness in some tin foil and saw where I could route the harness a couple inches further away from the exhaust, next to the two fuel line inlet / outlet hoses. I wonder if the foil will be okay, as far as the sensor signal goes? (I presume the current sensor is shot anyways after the original wiring shorting out last week) With your advice I was able to do a better online search for a more appropriate heat shielding product and found some hi-temp shrink tubing in a large enough diameter that I will try asap.
