looking to glue new fabric and was told spray can glue doesn't hold up over time. Headliner will sag ?
Local shop wants $75 just to glue my fabric ?
Looking for reviews on spray adhesives application & long term

 

A contact cement designed for fabric will hold. Something like 3m super 77 should hold. Or 3m 38808 is designed for headliners.

 

Super 77 . I used it on my second attempt . Guy at fabric shop sold me special head liner glue that would take the high summer temps . It sucked . See Bleepin' Jeep headliner video .

 

Since I am getting ready to brush off the old foam from my headliner board I am interested in this topic and want to ask what other preparation is needed to the headliner board, do you need to use a chemical to remove glue? Any other prep?

 

Brush it clean and apply Super 77 per the instructions on the can.

It's really very easy to do.

 

Yeah go 3m they make a lot of stuff and i haven't got anything bad from them yet.

 

Use cheap plastic bristle brushes for removing glue . . May take two . Plan on throwing the brushes away .

 

For $125 I had one installed at a shop using the factory material they had, excellent price for removing, cleaning the old then replacing the material, reinstalling looks like new after 3 yrs.

 

I did the same thing. In my town we have a guy. He is the go to guy for all the classic car upholstery needs. $125 but I had to remove the headliner and drop it off. My thinking was is I would try to buy matching fabric, spend money on good 3M glue, do a poor job, spend $60+ trying, and end up with a sagging headliner down the road. Sometimes it is best to let the experts handle it.

 

I've done a few, but like others I had the XJ done. 2 guys came to the house and put mine in for a hundred bucks. At that price it's almost cheaper to have them do it.

 

The shop I go to is a man and his wife excellent work on all my cars.

 

I did a lot of research on this a couple of years ago when I did mine. I used the 3M 90 which is more heavy duty and it's been great for the past 2 years.

They are both readily available, why not go with the more heavy duty one.

 

I've replaced the headliner in both of our XJs. The Sport was done 2 years ago and the Limited was done this past August. I used Permatex heavy duty headliner and carpet glue. It comes in an Orange can. So far I am very happy with the results.

A lot of guys suggested Super 77 and have had success. I didn't use it because the instructions say not to use on automotive headliners.

 

I'm holding a can of Super 77 in my hand right now. I see nothing about not using it on headliners. I know it worked great on mine.

What it should say on the can is, 'resists heat, can be applied to overhead applications'. Otherwise the rated shear force of adhesive may not be adequate to hold material overhead. And the excessive heat can break down the glue.
