Headlight trouble

Last night I was I came home turned off the lights and turned off the jeep (89 XJ) . But the head lights stayed on!! Got back in the messed with the headlight switch and nothing. Turned the ignition to on position and back off and then the lights turned off. Has this happened to anyone else?
Any ideas?
