I'm planning on doing the head gasket in my 93 4.0 and also the valve seals while I have the head off. I was wondering what else should I do while I'm in there? I'm changing out the manifold for a header and I have a 99+ intake I'm putting on while its all off but I want to know if theres anything that should be done before it goes bad since I'm sure combined everyone here has done this a few times. Thank you all in advance for the help provided.

 

get a valve lapping kit, for sure. If you can port and polish also, that's awesome, but at least lap the valves and seats.

 

I wish I could port and polish, is the lapping kit the suction cup tool? And if it is then I'd need that and a tube of valve grinding compound correct?

 

I've used a short piece of fuel line, (clamped on the stem), and just my cordless drill. Allot easier than by hand!

Also look into checking for warpage. A nice straight edge and a .004 feeler gauge might be all you need. Idk if you couldn't get away with a little more there or not.

 

of all the things I have I cant find my feeler gauge set from lincoln tech and I don't think theres a straight edge at my house which is odd lol the fuel line trick sounds like it would free up some time, still need the compound right?(now reading that it seems like a stupid question)

I already know how its gonna go: a lot of swearing a few bandages and lots more swearing

 

Oh and anyone ever use the fel-pro severe duty head gasket? I'm most likely going with that one just because is rather have something stronger than I'll need so I'm more than covered (probably should've went with the severe duty radiator when I replaced it lol) makes me feel more secure.

 

Does anyone know where I can find a set of head bolts for my 93? I've found for the 96 and up but not my year.

I'm looking at putting in a new gasket myself. It's leaked since we've had it, not much but enough that you can't even touch most of the cables under the hood without getting your hand covered in grease. And I believe it's the reason why I have such bad oil pressure

 

Do you need a head gasket or valve cover gasket?
