Why don't the head gaskets have port holes for the coolant? From the indents on my old gasket, it looks like they should be thru holes ??

I believe the holes in the block/head are casting holes. Coolant enters the front of the block, flows to the rear of the block, exits the block up to/thru the rear of the head, then thru the head toward the front where it exits to the bypass loop/radiator. The head gasket is meant to seal/plug the casting holes.

i guess that would make sense. there are holes on the opposite side of the gasket. where the triangles are (not in the pic). i just figured that they would be on both sides.. thanks for the lesson kind sir!
