Hello all !
So my baby died on me ( only second time in over 20+ years, so can't complain ) and I'm replacing the alternator. I see that it has a external voltage regulator mounted on the back of the alt.
I'd like to replace it while I'm in there but it is hardwired into the harness. Is there a replacement unit that I just cut / splice into the harness, or does the original get bypassed someway with a newer unit ?
Seems strange that it is hardwired in.

Here is a video where you can see it. Around 4.30 into the video you see it bolted on to the back of the alt.

That's just the connector... You can cut that all off and crimp on new ring terminals, if you wanted; it doesn't do anything...

 

Thanks much ! Seemed weird that it would be the regulator, but I just wasn't sure.
This alternator is original ( 406,000+ miles on it ), so I'm hoping it's the problem.
