Default Hard Starter

I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee, 4 liter 6, automatic transmission, neglected. It starts hard, once draining out the battery. The smell of gas was noted. That one time, after recharging the relatively new battery, and let it set for an hour, it started. It idles pretty well, but even when warmed up, it will sometimes cough and hesitate when accelerating from a stop. Any ideas where I should start.

O2 sensors? That would explain the smell of gas "running rich" and the possible hiccups

My Universal Code Reader doesn't connect to this one. (HEAVY SIGH). I'll go replace the O2 sensor. See if that's it. Thanks, guys
