I have had the same problem on my 88.
Symptoms:
The tranny does not slip, it does not engage at all.
When cold or after a wheeling session the tranny will not get into reverse, only if you give a couple of high revs and then it will engage with a bump.
Sometimes forward it will start in 2nd and if you floor it it shifts to first, stays there until you give a pair of good revs.
If it starts in first it will stay in first unless you give the upmentioned revs.
This lasts the first 5 minutes of driving in the morning then it drives and shifts perfectly the rest of the day.
What i have done:
I changed the TPS, nothinhg.
I changed the fluid and oil screen, it went better for a few days but then it went back to do it.
I replaced the solenoids in the valve body. Works fine now.
The old ones had a swallen oring and the plunger tends to get stuck in the rest position, the solenoid somehow doesn't have enough force when the fluid is still thick and cold.

I wouldn't worry about it til it completely ghee out on you. I had a 98 Tahoe that did the same thing every time trans was cold. Once it got warmed up, if shifted perfect out of first gear. Drove like that for over 34k miles and never progressed. I have 279k on my original wj tranny. And shifts like it did from the factory. But I have changed the fluid every 15k miles since it was new.

Could you go into more detail about the solenoids in the Valve body.

Can anyone tell me alittle more about our tranny soleniods????? Would really like to get this resolved without having a large bill from a transmission shop.
How hard is it to search "AW4 Solenoids" in google?
