I am going to have to say that is not the NSS... as it generally doesn't let the engine start... Is that all you had done was cleaned the NSS prior to this happening???

yea that is all i had done to it, on the first crank right after putting the nss right back together this happend. i was thinking if i bypass the nss just to check if it started normal this would confirm that the nss is the problem or not, correct?

first is just cranks non-stop like a long screech, then the sound it makes is like when the engine is already on. i just pulled the nss off again and adjusted it to start on n and p. i dont know if i should buy a new nss, or a new starter.. my starter is full of gunk.. could that be it?

sounds like the starter is engaging, cranking, then un-engaging, and re-engaging the flywheel.

What if you jumper 12V to the little wire going to the starter. This will bypass the NSS completely and get the start to crank. If it cranks solidly, then you know is something else than the starter. Like the NSS not adjusted/still dirty/not making good connection.

I don't have a lot of experience with Cherokee's but, I have had years of experience with other vehicles. Every time I have heard something like that it's been something to do with the starter being bad or loose or the fly wheel having some bad teeth unless the transmission is literally locking up.

and if it makes the same sound then it would be the starter is failing, and if it sounds normal then more than likely it would be the nss, correct?

Correct.

This test will check the starter and flywheel teeth for broken/chewed up teeth causing the grinding noise.

If it cranks solidly, then you have a problem before the starter. I.e. Wiring to the starter causing intermittent starter engagment

If it still makes the grinding sound, then the starter could be bad, or chewed up teeth on the starter gear or flywheel.
