Hello all, I had an incident where my knuckle broke when off-roading. I replaced knuckle, and went ahead and did all 4 brakes (2 disc, 2 drum), and the brake line. However, after my knuckle snapped I had to tow my jeep back using a dolly. I put the transfer case (np231) in neutral and the auto trans in neutral. I just finished replacing all the parts and tried to drive it. Whenever I try to shift trans case there is a horrible grinding sound, and when I drive it feels like the jeep is skipping. In addition to this, when testing the drum brake tightness, I noticed when I rotated the back wheels, it felt like something was skipping. I appreciate any advice or bad news about the transfer case. Thank You.
For future reference, you should put the automatic in park and the xfer case in neutral. If you put the automatic in neutral leave the xfer case in gear, it'll spin the output of the automatic but the output bearings won't be getting lubed because the trans pump is driven by the engine input. Xfer case spinning should be fine though.
This could be a simple as the xfer case linkage being out of adjustment. Or needing to put the trans in park so the input of the xfer case isn't spinning when you try to shift.
