Hello All!
First time on this forum. Have 2000 XJ with 168,000 miles. Love this car!
Suddenly towing light boat up hill at 75 mph, extreme grinding noise for 5 long seconds with loss of power, then back normal for an hour of driving.
Another day, same boat, sound comes on goes away then returns 10 seconds later and will not stop. Car will not drive. Car on hill and Park does not engage brake. Use emergency brake instead.
Mechanic on phone says blown axle, says drive it in 4-wheel so shift into 4-wheel low and it works! No grinding.
Thought it was transmission. Definitely in the front. If the 4-wheel works wouldnt that eliminate the front axle?
What would be the "blown" part of the axle if that was the issue?
When it first started, got sound recorder out...here it is...
Thanks for your input!
