Back and forth play. Which I'm pretty sure is normal. No up and down play

It has to be something in the front but I'm 99% sure the front bearings are good and there's nothing that seems to be rubbing or anything

You shouldn't have any in-and-out play at the pinion. I'd pop that cover and take a look inside. Wouldn't be surprised if there was glitter coming out.

Hi - did you ever figure out was making the noise? Mine is doing the same thing and I too am completely stumped . 1995 Cherokee.
