Default Grinding noise?

I did a search and I am having a problem finding a solution. When I took it to the shop they found everything but this wrong. I have a constant sort of grinding or metal on metal sound. It only makes this noise while the jeep is in motion. When I slow down to come to a stop it seems to slow a little and go away, and it comes back when I move again. If i take my foot off the accelorator the sound does not stop, so i have concluded that it must be comming from my wheels or axel. The sound comes from the front. It does not change with the movement of the steering wheel either. They claim my rotors are warped so i thought i could have a rotor and brake pad rubbing, or a dust shield. I just dont know.

i'd be 75% sure it is your brakes. if it is a constant scraping that speeds up as you go fast and slows down as you go slower i'd say your brake pads are def rubbing.

My buddy had a similar problem but it was in the rear. It ended up we found that he has a small chip on one of the teeth on his pinion gear.

I'm willing to be that it is your brakes in the front.

x2 I have had 3 vehicles do this it was worn pads, get someone drive slowly while applying the brakes and wal beside it to hear where the noise is. worst case pull the calipers loose look at the pads, I had replaced brakes once and the clips that make them squeal when worn were bent forward and they were squealing like crazy.

Pull the front driveshaft and see if the noise is still there.

Thanks guys, I have a set of brake pads and I am planning on ordering a set of rotors and changing them out soon. I just had the rear brakes and axel seals changed this weekend. I have never heard this noise before.

Default TRY.....

Try the dust shields, if it was the brakes, you would feel it in the pedal. Unless its real faint, but loud enough to hear. Just my opinion. I'm sure you've already checked that out though?

I have the same issue with my 90 XJ and swapped rotors, brakes, but noixe just like you described happens on mine. I think I will try the wheel bearings next to see if it stops this also. But yea, same grinding sounds and not brakes on mine.

yeah..mine too. mine only does it in 4 wheel...quits in 2 wheel. my front driveshaft seems to have slop in it,and its at a pretty rough angle (3 in lift) so i think thats where i think im gonna start.

Default Grinding noise on 90 XJ update

I swapped rotors and pads but still can hear this noise of grinding?? Kinda weird but looked around some and I think the steering box is the problem. Turning right at 45 miles per hour I can hear some and coming to a stop some...I will try this and see what happens. Thanks to all on this forum...

did you try spinning the hub/rotor while you where doing the brakes to see where the noise was coming from ??

just have someone drive it while you walk next to it and listen for the noise

I can't believe this old thread was dug up.... the power of search. I just learned to deal with the sound. It seems like common road noise. I drove a 2006 F150 before buying my jeep and that truck was super quiet on the road. Our jeeps seem to amplify every sound. There are noises that I hear comming from the enigine while sitting in the jeep that I can hardly hear standing outside it.

BTW... I swapped brakes and rotors when I first got the jeep and the noise did not go away. I think it comes from the a slight rubbing of the pad and rotors.

A broken spring in the e brake can cause it to engage and rub without an easy diagnosis. Happened to me once. Pulled the rotor off and the brake was expanded with a broken spring.
