sometimes when i try to put the jeep into reverse, the gears just grind even while my clutch is engaged. Why would this be?

you have an AX-15...that just happens. You can reduce it by making sure you always have enough gear oil in the tranny, but sometimes for no reason it will just happen. If you want you can put it in reverse before starting the engine. It doesn't help with parallel parking or 3 point turns, but at least you'll save yourself the grinding when backing out of your garage or a parking space.

clutch master or slave cylinder will cause that problem also... Master usually wears and will not hold enough pressure to completely disengage the clutch, the slave can do the same but will usually leak fluid when it goes bad. If you dont see any fluid, it is most likely the master cylinder or low on fluid

Try putting it in 1st before putting it in Reverse. Sometimes I will have this problem as well.

Most likely the master as long as you have not found any fluid leaking. That would point more to the slave if you did... The master cylinder is a typical cause of what you are describing though so that would be a start

Tap the gas as you put it into reverse... Works for me. Otherwise, it is normal. Or you could switch to thicker/heavier oil.

X4 on the clutch master cylinder. They are a poor design IMHO. They start to loose a little pressure and thereby not make the clutch disengage all the way. You are going to have to replace it.
