a distributorless ignition i.e. coil pack setup sends a signal from a crank/cam sensor to an ecu that fires a coil which fires the corresponding plug (in very short basic sense) an electronic distrubutor has a magnetic pickup inside the distributor that works as a CPS tells the coil to fire as the rotor passes buy a terminal inside the cap.....thus the jeep 4.0 seems to be a little of both (at least thats how i'm seeing it) and all these understandings in place slotting the cap is the same as turning the distributor and won't do anything which was my main hiccup in the first place only backwards

I think what he meant was that someone told him he can cut one the ears off the distributor hold down clamp to further adjust timing. I was gonna do that as well, until I got convinced that timing can NOT be adjusted this way on OBDII vehicles. I experienced the same in my 94 Ford Mustang's Adaptive Control.

That's why I just bought Unichip from AutoAnything.com $473 and I'll reprogram it (dyno-tune) for another $175.. the part number for 1999 Cherokee is 2720021
