Ok, so I saw a few days ago about someone wanting to put grand cherokee seats in their xj and I was a little confused because someone mentioned about the seat bracket changing in 93 or 94 or something like that...
My question:
I have an 89 XJ and want to put something different in (doesn't need to be leather).. what years ZJ, WJ or newer XJ would work for my vehicle?

I know up to 92 on the XJ seats. I have no idea what years form any of the Grands will work. I am going to the jy either tommorow or Friday to do some research on gauge cluster interchangability and will do a little research on the seats as well. I will post my findings for everyone.

I am the original poster on that. Still would like to know, as I am sure many of us would, what would be a drop-in replacement for XJ 92 & earlier.
Especially if something nicer from a Grand Cherokee would drop in. Probably too much to hope for.

So what ever became of this? I've been thinking of installing some ZJ seats into my 01 XJ and wondered about compatibility as well. The mid 90s ZJ cloth seats were sooo nice..
Has anyone done this?

I just put a set of '97 ZJ front seats in my '99 XJ. I did a ton of research before doing the swap so here you go:
'84-'94 XJ's: Your seat mounts are different from those of '95+ XJ's. They are closer together, and they bolt into the body differently. This makes it impossible to do a simple seat track swap for a set of '95+ XJ, any ZJ, and/or any WJ seats to fit. However, with some small modification, you can make it work.
1. Get the floor mounts and hardware from a '95+ XJ.
2. Find your desired seats. Manual seats are much easier because you don't have to run wiring for the power, plus it's one less thing to go wrong.
3. You'll need to pull your current seats out, including the floor mounts.
4. Put in the new seats, fully assembled.
5. Mark where the bolt holes are at for the floor mounts and pull the seats back out.
6. Drill holes for the new mounts to match up to so they can be bolted to your XJ.
7. Put your new seats back in and bolt them in with thread lock.
'95-'01 XJ's: Very simple swap
1. Find your desired seats from either a '95+ XJ, any ZJ, or any WJ.
2. Pull out the seats by simply unbolting the floor mounts.
3. Swap your current floor mounts and track rails with those on the new seats.
4. Put the new seats in and bolt them in. Congratulations, you now have a much comfier XJ!
Backseat swap for 60/40 split ZJ/WJ rear seat: I'm currently working on this with mine and all I can currently tell you is that it takes a decent amount of modification. Once I have mine done I'll be doing a full write up with pictures.

Scored a pair at a local salvage lot for $150, came from a 98 ZJ. They're in great shape - just needed some serious cleaning. Same seats I had in my 96 ZJ - they'll be a nice replacement for the stock 01 XJ seats!!!

i would like to see a write up for a 94, cause i dont want to just drill random holes and then rip through my floorboards when offroading
exact ones i got as well. VERY comfortable! Still working on the rear though. I need a welder to get it done so it may be a while.

You dont modify the floor to seatbase bolt pattern. You modify the seatbase to seat bottom bolt pattern.
4 pieces of angle iron works well.

Completed exactly as others had posted - simple rail swap/re-install. Ahhh, SO comfy! I like the height increase and improved visibility - I'm 6' tall and find it VERY comfortable!
