keep in mind americans that xj's are far harder to come by up here in canada and are usually more expensive up here, also keep in mind this one is very clsoe to where i live so i would not have to pay money to travel to go buy one, here's the ad, thanks for any advice. also one question, do those really look like 31 inch tires to you ? they look like 21 inch tires to me? whats up?
here's the ad

All things considered seems like a good deal. That's close (in USD at least) to what that would fetch around me. As always, same stuff would need to be checked - engine maintenance, rust, wobble, etc. - but seems like a good deal, yes.

yeah, that's not that bad.
at least it's in alberta, so no salt on the roads.
i would try to get him to fix the fault for the check engine light. replace the sensor or whatever it takes.
the hood release cable, that's easy to do yourself.
mileage isn't too bad either.
plus it has the 8.25, so bonus.

I would guess the tires were 31"'s and had to tell from the photos much else about it. As far as the rust take a small screwdriver with you and push around anywhere you see any rust the door, rocker panels, floor pans, frame rails push hard on these.
I agree with having him fix the check gauges lite what ever that is. He says it needs shocks figure 2-$400 for those nothing fancy. Then drive it out checking the 4x4 low and high plus highway speeds up and down for steering. Mileage is good for the age also but check all the fluids for color, level and smell.
Price seems to be right on the mark for around here also,

Before you start poking the seller's Jeep with a screwdriver, causing holes and digging around, you'd better ask his permission first.
Check engine light is usually emissions related, but it can be any number of things--and some are expensive.
Yes, the tires look like 31s, there are no 21s that look remotely like that.

wuts the 8.25 mean bra?
i just bought it.
it's mine now.
drove it home.
he seemed honest about everything in the ad.
needs rear shocks badly tho.
how should i go about it?
check engine light is also on, he doenst know why but thinks it's just a censor.
what should i do?
tires should last the winter and probably the summer, but how much do 31 tires cost new each?
other then that love it so far.

Where are you in Canada? My wife is currently visiting family in Levis, Quebec. We are considering moving to Gaspesié Canada, or is it Gaspé, I do not speak Canadian French.

Check engine light? Pull the codes to see what it is!
31" tires in the `P`version (265/75/15) are about $130 mounted and balanced.
Flotation tires, 31" x 10.5" x 15" will cost more, but offer more plys on sidewall and deeper thread depth, also heavier.

PartSource or NAPA should be able to pull the codes for free. If you're serious about the Jeep though, Princess Auto fequently has sales on Autel OBD-II scanners. Definitely worth the price. I have an AL-439 and it's been very helpful. Don't fall for the overpriced ****-*** code readers at Canadian Tire.
That really looks like 30" tires with 4" of lift to me. Not enough sidewall to be real 31s and 2" lift has faaar less room between the fender flares and tires. Tell ya what though, measure the distance between the middle of the hub caps to the bottom of the plastic fender flares. Stock height is about 17". OE tires are 225/75R15 which work out to around 28" diameter.
