Default The good alternator, the bad gauge and the ugly Jeep

. So This what has been happening to the jeep,

I'm hoping any of yall jeep doctors can give a diagnosis or something: Patient - 96 XJ, with confirmed bad NSS(because I can start in Any gear I want), and coolant sensor(for gauge, because it's not showing the temp).

Symptoms, Before: the voltage gauge stays around the edge of 9 of the red zone. And it doesn't move no matter what gear I'm in or how long I've driving. NO GEN Light.

Symptoms, Recently: voltage gauge stays around 9, upon start up, NO GEN light. and it'll jump to somewhere near 12-13ish.

But from yesterday to today, the GEN light will kick on, after start up when it's around 9, and later when it jumped to 13ish, GEN light won't turn off for the rest of the trip.

I took it to Autozone. Check result shows, Starter, Battery, Alternator are all good.. So I'm clueless. Any ideas?

--------- I also noticed, there is fluctuations on my fuel gauge as well. It was refilled at 240miles, and now it's 320miles - 80 miles, and it says I've burnt more than 1 quater and a half (7-8 gal) on the gauge. And sometimes, it'll fall back (closer to the next marker - half tank, in this case), but never bounce back more than what it was before.

And I was driving 2013 Elantra and 2012 Altima, so I do feel this XJ accelerates a lot slower, and doesn't give much gas, with the same pressure on the pedal. I was always the slowest to catch up after the light turned green.

This is my first Xj, so I don't know if it's because I'm used to be a light foot, or something isn't right. I'm only on 235/75/15 - why do I get ****ty fuel economy? -----------------

As with any XJ electrical problems, all the ground points in the engine bay must be disassembled, ring terminals cleaned with ScotchBrite pads, and tightly reassembled. This includeds the battery connectors of course. With this accomplished, troubleshooting may be attempted if the problem persists.

Sounds like the fuel level sender in the fuel tank is going/gone out. Bad JuJu for a '96. No Parts.

Start with new spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor.

If you can post pictures of all the ground points in the engine bay that you can find. Just want to compare them to the '97 > XJ's.

Have you considered a faulty gauge cluster?

All the photos I took under the hood today, besides a few on the front brakes, because when I turn sharply, there is always this squeaking sound. Brake fluid is running low, left brake is not covered!?

And it looks like there is a leak below the belt as well.

For the rest if the photo I can only identify coolant sensor ( for the computer) and crankshaft position sensor. My temperature gauge is not working, but I don't know where is the temp sensor for gauge.

What ever advice you have, I appreciate it.

Coolant sensor for the gauge is on the driver's side of the head, way in back. Right next to the valve cover lip. Single wire.
Is that brake fluid or axle lube on your passenger's side front knuckle? Looks like an axle seal leak to me.
Normal for brake fluid to drop down near the 'add' level as the pads/shoes wear down. Have you noticed a leak or had to add any?

Well I noticed that leak as well, that why I'm thinking it might be brake fluid... How to fix an axle leak anyway? I'm a dummy on cars..

I'm going to get brake fluid soon.. Is it a good idea to top it?

You replace a leaky axle seal by pulling both front axles out (great time to do the u joints too), then removing the front diff from the housing. The seals are in the pumpkin where the axle shafts enter.

Temp sensor location (not my pic, stolen from the internet):

Yup, that is only the top half, the rest of it is broken off in the manifold
