Default Glass Removal

Okay guys, How hard is it to remove the rear solid glass's out of a 99 2 door XJ? More importantly how hard is it to put them back in? I need them tinted so I am contemplating removing the glass to do it.

Not sure about install, but removal is real easy. The rubber edging is attached to the window, not the body of the XJ.

Get a buddy to help, and start at the rear bottom corner, push out while peeling up the inside of the rubber trim. It should peel roght off the mount.

I would just leave it in and not risk damaging the seal just to tint the window.

I put the windows back in my dads '89 2 door & was surprised how easy it was. I even used a screw driver to help, but don't recommend it.

The installation will be a lot easier with a new gasket if you can afford it.

The best way is to oil up a piece of 3/16-1/4" poly or nylon braided line and set it into the gasket across the top and down both sides.
Pull all the plastic trim in back around the window and have some help to keep pressure on the glass.
Start the window at the bottom edge, with the glass and the flange of the body in place in the gasket. As you pull the line out, it will stretch the gasket out and you can slip the glass in place as you go.

It may take more then one try first time.
I can send you pictures of the process from the Factory Service Manual if it my explanation isn't clear enough.

I never did it in a jeep but I used to install sliders in pick-ups and it's the same process.

I'd be a little concerned about doing it with sheet tinting adhered to exterior/interior side of the glass (rather then a tint samwiched in the middle). I don't know that the cord wouldn't roll the tint up.
It might be safer to pull the cord out from the side that doesn't have tint stuck to it.

I'm pretty sure any sort of a pry-bar or screw driver will wreck the tint and there's no chance the cord will break the glass.
