Getting around 14mpg city in my 2001 Cherokee...
Hey everyone,
Just did some calculations based off two tanks of gas driving in the city...averaging 14-15 mpg in my stock 2001 Cherokee 2door 4.0.
Seems a little low to be honest, anyone else in this ballpark?
Thanks

That's about right. Maybe 1 or 2 less than the EPA rating. How many miles does it have? Is it 4WD? Auto or manual? There are many factors that determine MPG. Your right foot is probably the largest factor.

Yep, these vehicles have a lot of great qualities but they are not gas mileage champs.
I was averaging about 15 mpg on my '99 in mixed driving. Then after a tuneup (new plugs, wires, cap, rotor) it increased to about 17. This is with 4.0 and automatic, measured over multiple fillups. If I was doing mostly city driving I'd expect 14 mpg would be about right. Maybe a 4-cylinder model with stick shift would do better.

Tire size doesn't make that much difference in mpg's if you have installed the proper gears, like a 33" tire needs a 4.56 gear. Lift does affect wind drag and roof racks do somewhat also.
I have a 4 1/2" lift, 33" tires with lots of extra weight and average 15-17 mpg average if I drive properly. Yours at stock could do a little bit better but not a lot for city driving. A full tune-up could help you with a lot of things on any SUV of that age.

That's not about right.
I get a consistent 18-19, even when it's not running right.
14 MPG means something is wrong. Either an engine malfunction or really bad driving habits.
OR, you aren't calculating it correctly, and we see a lot of that on this board.
So, how are you calculating it?
And what kind of driving do you do? Lots of stop & go? Short haul?

And my Honda gets 32 mpg. Blah blah blah this thread can go on and on without end.
So here is my attempt: tune it up, inflate your tires properly and drive it like there is only so much gas left on the planet and see if you get that massive improvement to 15 or, dare I say it, 16 mpg in the city?
Or you could drive it like you stole it and not give a crap.

I've got a 90 XJ that gets 13 or a 02 Z28 that gets 18 (on premium only). Factor the cost of premium into the mix, and it's a wash as to which is cheaper to operate. You need better mileage, get a econo box for daily driver duty. Thats my plan. I've been looking at the Fiesta as they are cheap and get excellent mileage.
