Gears locked up after 4lo

Engine: 4.0 liter
Gears locked up after 4lo
I went to put in 4lo it grinded got stuck and then when I got it back into 4hi my gears were locked up couldnt shift at all. Got underneath I pet my tranny and clutch sweet talked my jeep some and gave it about 15 minutes then it worked any ideas. My syncros are messed up is this why it did it or is this a transfer case problem?
