The other day i bought a front axle out of an 86 w/ vac disconnect and 4:10 gears, all i really want are the gears to put into my 01 that currently has 3:55 gears. Is it possible to just swap gears from one to the other or must i change the carrier too? And i guess as long as i am asking, is there anything else that has to be changed or modified to do this swap? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

 

They wont work because the 01 is a low pinion, the 86 is a High Pinion, meaning they (High Pinion) turn different, hence the term reverse cut. unless someone swapped in a high pinion axle.
