I got my cluster off ebay for 65.00 shipped it is a direct swap no other parts are needed for the 97-01 xj.You will have to write down mileage off orginal spedo if you want to keep track of your mileage.

ok guys. got a cluster from ebay . i plugged her in and everything works perfect! tach, temp, oil pressure , everything.

just ONE small issue:

the trunk lid open light, in the lower corner, is red and has been on since i put the cluster in. . . i have 2 options.

either i didnt smoosh the adapters in enough(i just slid the cluster in place and stopped when it bottomed out) , or the tailgate open sensor doesnt work.

i salmmed the trunk closed every which way, even wd40'd the latch, but it still stays on...

any suggestions?!?
worst case scenario, i just find out which wire that plugs into the cluster is in charge of the tailgate open light and snip it . what ya think?
i couldnt imagine that the harness is inserted enough for EVERYTHING to work BUT the trunk open light... doubtful . probably just wont work. . . if thats the case, how would i find out which color wire it is?

i dont even see a tailgate door light trigger back there! you know, the thing on the front doors in the door jam that tells the interior light to come on... no sensor back there at all.

Don't cut any wires. Just take the bulb out that illuminates the hatch open light. No chance of messing up any wiring for anything else that way

I just got done doing mine. (lost 37k miles ) I noticed when I pulled mine that the old one didn't have a 'hatch open" light so I removed the bulb. All is well.

Should have snapped a pic of the old and new. Wrote it down. Especially if the date/time of the pic is within even a day, who can drive 90k in that amount of time?
If you do not plan on selling then do not worry about it. If anything, keep your stock cluster for when you do sell!

Default Gauge problem

Ok, Mine is a little more complicated. I bought a 94 cherokee with a rolling chasy and complete interior (minus the gauge cluster and computers) for $400. I had a complete 96 XJ that was banged up real bad so I decided to move the engine, trany and the wiring harness from the engine bay over. I got all that done...everything runs. Here's the problem....none of the gauges work. All the gauges worked in the 96. Any ideas what may be causing this? Is there a special fuse for the gauge cluster? Everything plugged right up. The only thing in the 94 wiring harness that didn't match the 96 wiring harness was a plug with 8 wires in it by the pedals. I thought that it was for the airbags/cruise control since the 94 does not have it...

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Guys! The Cherokee I just tore apart for parts for the Comanche had guages in it, and the Comanche has idiot lights. Last night I just put the steering column back into it, afraid to try the guages because I knew I'd at least have to change the sending units (no biggie) but I was afraid I needed to change the wiring as well, and I hate wiring. Now that I know I can just plug and play, guess what I'll be doing this morning?
