My 2001 cherokee is showing the check engine light. I can have it reset and I can drive around the world and back without it going off again until I hit a bump pretty hard and BING, there it is again. The dude at Advanced. Auto Zone...or wherever I went, said it was probably the gas cap was lose or I got gas with the engine still running. WHAT? Anyway, I have ensured I cut the thing off when I get gas and I turn the cap about ten times when I put it back on and the light still pops up. I carried it ot a couple of other parts stores and had them scan it just to see if I got something different and they all said "gas cap" right off the bat. Can my gas cap just be "bad"? Should I replace it? Also, what other issues could be throwing that same code. The jeep is running fine and I cant tell any difference anywhere with the light on or off so I dont think it's a critical issue but I would like to get the light off and keep it off.

I would think a gas cap would be cheap enough to give it a try and not worry or stress about it.

Buy a gas cap at one of these autoparts stores you frequent and if it don't work march right back in there an tell them you want a refund. I mean it is a crappy thing to do but you can do it. Tell them there scanner is broke lol.

 

what code is it exactly give the letters and numbers please

 

just an fyi, 01 jeeps use a pre-vented gas cap.
those small ones at auto part stores are only vented.

i had to get mine for the tj at the dealer. 45 bux.

UPDATE: Got a new gas cap....just tried one from the parts store and had them reset the check engine light.....no more issues. It seems to have solved it. Thanks
