Default gage warning light on & no oil pressure showing

Had something new happen with my 2001 Cherokee and want to check with the experts. I drove 5 or 6 miles in town and when I stopped noticed my gage warning light was on and didn't show any oil pressure on the oil gage. I checked the oil and was even or just below the bottom mark on the dipstick. I drove it home for lunch and noticed the oil light went off and showed oil pressure until I came to a stop light and idled. I added a quart of oil, which brought it even to the upper mark on the dipstick and drove back to work..another 5 miles. The light came on and showed no pressure when I stopped and let it idle for a minute of so. If I reved the engine a little the oil ressure gage perked up. I light didn't come on when I drove home and stayed off and showed good oil pressure when I let it idle for a few minutes. This all suggests I was just low. Are there any other things I should be checking that are commonly known problems areas for Cherokee's regaring the gage warning light and oil pressure gage? It has 95k. Should I be checking other stuff...like the oil pump?

the best thing to do is have someone put a manual gauge on it and get an acual reading. could be just a faulty wire, and or sending unit.

update: I ended up replacing the sending unit and oil gage now working properly and no warning light. I was able to replace the sending unit myself. The hardest part was figuring out how to release the latching mechanism for the wiring connection. Sorry about not posting the successful outcome for 2 years!

Sorry, I can't be of much help. Seems like there was only one type for my 2001 Cherokee (4.0 liter). Perhaps the auto parts store has both types (single/double) in stock, or a diagram you can compare to what your Jeep has. I've found a lot of videos on youtube of folks who replaced the sending unit on Jeeps. You should check them out. Here is the url to one

Good Luck
