FYI part of my overheating problem solved: Temp Gauge
 

After replacing most of the cooling system on Dad's (now mine) 92 Cherokee it was still "overheating". It would peg itself upon starting, even with the ignition on. All that I read was that if it pegged itself that the gauge was working (people test it by grounding it out which pegs the gauge). So I figured I may have a short to ground. Took the cluster out and looked at the board. Slight corrosion but not bad. Cleaned it with contact cleaner. I noticed the gauge was showing about 210 degrees on the gauge. Hmmm. Took the gauge out of the cluster and looked it over. With it in my hand the gauge was reading about 260. As I looked it over I noticed slight corrosion around the resistor. Sprayed it down with contact cleaner. The Temp dropped. After a couple more hits with contact cleaner I reinstalled it and put everything back together. Now still reading a bit high but she needs to have some flush run through her and the forward radiator sprayed out. Although after wiring the aux fan up and checking to make sure the fan was blowing the right way it took out most of my pinky nail. That's not feeling too warm and fuzzy right now. Ouch. I am an official dumb #%^


Also after it was reinstalled the gauge was bouncing around. I took out the BWD temp sensor and installed an Eklind from Napa and all is working well.

I have no idea how it is on a '92, but on an '01 all the gauges return to 0 when the key is in the "OFF" position.

I would imagine with it completely unplugged from the system it reads the ambient air. the small bit of corrosion was causing faulty readings.

with just water and flushing agent and no thermostat it's a beautiful thing.

that is probably that new crappy sending unit/ fuel pump airfix(?) puts out.

Yep. I don't have a thermostat in right now, flushed the system while dealing with an overheating issue and haven't put one back in yet. I give it a few minutes to warm up to at least 150 before driving. Stays right around 200 - 205. I'll be putting a thermostat back in once it starts to cool off here.
