Default fuel tank access panel?

so im gonna have to drop my tank prolly next weekend, to change the sending unit, im hoping that with a lil help and some careful cutting i can cut and access opening in the back so that i dont have to drop my tank, anyone kno how much space there is between the floor and the tank? im def gonna do this after i drop the tank if i have to but im just wondering if i can do it without dropping the tank.

Man, I think this sounds pretty dangerous what you're wanting to do. Anything you use, to cut through the metal of your floorboards and gastank, power on manual will cause a spark. Also if you get this hole cut without blowing yourself up then I believe you will always have gas fumes inside your Jeep. Just my opinion but, not a very good idea.

thats kinda what i was thinkin too, but when i drop the tank and make the panel im gonna do some sort of a gasket or rtv to seal it up, id much rather scrape off some rtv and pull a few screws than drop the tank next time i gotta do something to the tank

Your fuel gauge sending unit and fuel pump are all one unit that is attached all together and goes through the access in the front side of the tank. So, even if you successfully make your new access hole. You still will have to remove the sending unit through the normal access to get it out of the tank.

just drop the tank and do it right, without hacking your truck up. On my truck it looks like I can swap a fuel pump pretty easily- its on the front side of the tank. I bet you can leave the tank in and do it.

I pulled my fuel pump and replaced it without dropping the tank. Only took me a couple of hours.

I had about a quarter tank when I replaced my pump. Not sure where the sending unit ground is actually grounded. Just follow the wire bundle that comes out of the tank until you find it.

I do love the Haynes Bible, Bro but, it may be wrong there as I replaced a fuel pump in my son's 87 XJ, also, and we didn't have to drop his tank either.
