Default fuel sending unit

i have a 98 with a 4.0. gas gauge does not work, and i'm getting a CEL for the sending unit. i'm guessing i just need to replace the the whole pump/sending unit.

is there any common wiring issues that can cause this? not really looking forward to dropping the tank unless i REALLY have to. i'd love it to just need a new wire or connection that just needs cleaned.

advance auto has has Airtex brand pump/sending units for $299. if i do need new parts, any suggestions on cheaper solutions?

if i drop the tank, i never want to do it again. so i want to buy a quality unit.

Nope, Its the sending unit. I also have a 98 with a bad sending unit. I can rock the jeep and the fuel gauge will sometimes go from full to empty.. Its a very common problem on 98 xj's.. I think they need to do a recall on it...
