I started to do that but I had (or thought I had) trouble in getting the unit through the hole. I was afraid of breaking something off in the tank. May sound silly to ask, but when I do have it loose again as I pull outward, it should be rotated 180 degrees to be like an upsidedown "L"?

Holy Smokes Batman! I actually located a 96 in the Pull-A-Part yard and I couldn't believe that it still had the fuel pump/sending unit. 5 minutes later, it was mine,..all mine, for $28.50
I still plan on trying to remedy the old one once removed, could be something simple/easy.

Did the swap. Rather than buy a new fuel pump, I just swapped the known working one that I had. Sending unit seems to be working just fine now, but waiting for it drop as fuel is used. Though it does appear more jumpy as the fuel gauge now will move up and down when uphill or downhill for more than 1/2 mile.
Only big issue I have is the large "O" ring seal. At first it was not completely sealed and I was losing gas fast until I could move to a hill fast. Had trouble repositioning it and holding it in place while installing the lock ring. Especially while half my sweatshirt was soaked in gas.

Have you had any more issues with your new (used) sending unit? I have the exact same issue. I really dont want to buy a used one and have to do the same job again down the road, but a brand new one from Chrysler or Quadratec just isnt in my budget. As for the "O" ring, all you need to do is apply some adhesive like super glue or thick grease to hold it in place.

Just an update if anyone (else) cared. The "new" used sending unit with the original fuel pump is still working just fine. I haven't let the tank get low enough for the low fuel light to come on though. Plan to keep the old unit in case I ever have to get it rebuilt.
