Fuel pump placement

So I've seen pics of XJ's with the fuel pump hangar assembly sticking out of the front of the tank, and the top of the tank. Whats up with that? Did they change the design after 95 or what?

Not that I'm aware of. Maybe the pics you saw were of some Redneck engineering.

yes, olders are in the front of the tank, newer on the top and you have to drop the tank. lunghd.com has a write up on the older style, you can see the on one the front of the tank,

did mine on a 91 same time a friend did his 00. much easier on the older ones.

It seems that the front style hangar would be ideal for a trail/expedition vehicle. It HAS to be easier to change. Why did they change the design?

Just out of curiosity, are the older fuel tanks compatible with later model XJ's?
