Hey guys, just came off a somewhat rugboarded gravel road. When I hit pavement, I heard the fuel pump growling from inside the '92 Jeep 4.0. Normally the pump has been very quiet, even difficult to hear from outside. Just a slight whine.

I am 1400 miles from home on vacation. It's Saturday night. I don't know anyone in this area.

Main question is, is the pump on the verge of failure?

 

There's no definitive answer. It's 8:45, are you still runnin?
Did the washboard snap a tank tie strap or exhaust hanger and that's whats makin noise?
Perhaps the fuel pump shifted, I've had a return line on the sending unit snap free and clatter and dangle around in the tank before. Hope it holds or is something else doin the noise.

 

I did go to the local O'Reillys before they closed and bought a Precision fuel pump. I had replaced my pump with an O'Reillys pump about 4 1/2 years ago. When I called back to my local store, the clerk told me there was a 1 year warranty on all their pumps regardless of the supplier.

At least I've got a replacement pump in hand if I need it. After the Jeep and the air temperature cooled off, my wife and I went out to eat. The pump is again sounding normal--just a low whirring sound. At no time has the Jeep exhibited any starting or running problems. The tank straps, shield, and tank itself all seem secure.

I'll find out more tomorrow when I take the Jeep out for another tour.
