Default Fuel Pump - How can you tell it's going out?

How can you tell when the fuel pump is going to lunch? I have an 87 XJ 4.0L. Generally only in the mornings when I go around a slanted curve off ramp on freeway the power seems to cut in and out......once the rig straightens up there isn't anymore issues. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

It could be that the hose is loose/coming off the pump/pick-up in the tank. JMO

Could have crud in your tank that sloshes and blocks the hose. Just something my friend suggested for me.

2x He could easily check that with a full tank.

mne went out last summer, I was driving up a mountain road, there was traffic a way ahead so I slowly let off the gas, the engine tried to die and stay alive at the same time. it better to get it looked at or changed if you think it could be going out, do your fuel filter too. th whole gas tank probably has to come off. by the way mine died and I had to pull off, my grandpa came in his cherokee and towed me an hour or so home that was it, fuel pump/ fuel filter

Mine quit suddenly with no warning. I was climbing a relatively short but steep hill, pulling a 3500# trailer. I was not floorboarding the throttle; just taking it easy.

I just made it to the top when the Jeep quit like the key was turned off.

After having it towed (another story) my mechanic finally figured out what was wrong.

The old pump did make a whining sound at the gas tank when the Jeep was idling; the new one doesn't. But I don't think the noise is a reliable indicator that one is fixing to go out.
