Fuel pump access on 97 XJ
I know there isn't an access panel for the XJ fuel sending unit/pump, BUT can one be made? I saw a post with no details on how it is done. Apparently you just cut a hole above the unit, then cover with appropriate metal cover, gasket, and short self tapping (i assume) sheet metal screws...
Pretty cool idea in theory.
Anyone done this? I think if it works it will be beneficial considering the life expectancy of our pumps (stock).
If not I'll try and get a better understanding and a write up if it works.
Thanks in advance.

I just replaced the fuel pump today in my 91. Adding an access panel is kinda useless. I don't know why you would want to add it frankly, you take the lock ring off and pull the unit out. since the sending unit is pretty much built into the pump, ( it is seperable I understand) but if you have issues with your pump or sending unit, you're oing to have to pull it out anyway.
I've seen models in the JY where the pump looks like it's centered above the tank. They're usually ZJ's though. I can understand where you want to get an access door in that situation. I don't think the pumps go out that often. It's really not that hard to drop the tank to do it and if you build a door to do it seems like you're looking for something to do. I'd spend my time on something more productive, but that's just me.
Also, building a door is going to requre a sawzall or similar where sparks will fly. It would scare the **** out of me compared to dropping a tank.
