Default Fuel pump-1989 Laredo-4.0l

Well I just wanted to post before I started working on replacing my fuel pump in the tank.
It appears that you don't have to drop the tank?
The only thing that doesn't make any sense is...
The Chiltons book says, "The rubber stopper on the end of the fuel return
tube must be inserted into the cup in the fuel tank reservoir".

How is that possible? Do you have room to stick you hand into the tank.
Any one one ever change a fuel pump in the tank?

Any thing else I should know before getting started. I bought the pump and screen, not the whole unit and pump.
Thanks!~John

PS> I have 3/4 tank of gas. How did you remove the gas? I have a hose and gas can.

You can do it, its just easier to drop the tank. As for the extra fuel you'll want to get it as low as possible remove the fillter neck and vent, and enter from there.

On a renix, you don't need to drop the tank. The pump is on the side of the tank. Knock the ring loose, and pull it out. As far as the fuel level, get it past half, you can take a suction pump, attach it to the return line, and suck out as much fuel as you need to.

Jack front up and fuel runs to back of tank.

When you knock off the retaining ring, you should use a brass punch. You want to try and not cause a spark. I have used a regular punch before but you just have to be careful.

The rubber stopper on the end of the fuel return tube must be inserted into the cup in the fuel tank reservoir...what does this mean and how do you do it?

John

At the end of the fuel module is a rubber bumper that fits into a recess in the tank. You'll see it.
