Hi guys. I'm new here! I just bought a 2001 XJ 5 days ago. All has been good. I was about to have it inspected so I could go through the title transfer process, and today, as I pulled into my driveway, I stopped to let my garage door open and started to smell fuel. I pulled the jeep into the garage, and when I got out, I was hit with a full dose of fuel. I quickly realized there was a major leak near the tank. Once all the fuel in the line had drained out, I entered cleanup mode, etc., etc. I found that the fuel line connector just before the fuel tank was completely disconnected; see the attached picture. My garage smells like I just dumped 10 gallons of fuel on the ground, so I'm still trying to air it out. I haven't turned the jeep on (out of fear I might explode, lol), so I'm unsure if it's still leaking. My question is, what could have caused this to disconnect? Im assuming this ones clearly compromised. Also, over the past couple of days, it's been difficult to crank, and it required what I thought was the fuel line to build up pressure. I'm assuming this new situation is related. Any input would be helpful! Thanks in advance.
I missed with it for a bit and got it reconnected
Has it had a fuel pump done recently or anything? No way that should have came apart on its own, usually those are a total PITA to get apart.
You gotta push them back together really hard until you hear a click.
Yeah, the previous owner recently replaced the fuel pump; however, I'm not exactly sure how recent. I was able to get the connector to click back into place, and Im still unsure if it still leaks. But yeah, Im concerned as to why this happened at all. The fuel line and connector look to be new, or at least not 25 years old.
Im thinking it didnt get clipped back together properly and it should be OK now if you got it clipped in good.
I would get a big fire extinguisher and cautiously drive it around for a while, but I think its Ok.
So the fuel line connection is not currently leaking. I talked with the previous owner, and he replaced the fuel pump in Oct of 2024. Not very recent, but still surprising if it has already failed. The previous owner installed a small fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail, and the other night, while trying to diagnose the slow crank issue, I noticed that the pressure was at 100psi !!! I turned off the jeep, and the pressure dropped instantly. Could a faulty fuel pump cause a sudden increase in pressure? Which ultimately caused the fuel line connector to give way?? But I would figure that if the fuel line was actually receiving 100psi it would be running horribly. Also, it is a cheap AutoZone water-filled pressure gauge, and it has been dipping well below freezing lately.

An 01 has the FPR in the tank attached to the fuel pump. I guess its possible if the regulator failed/got stuck the little plastic clips might not be able to handle 100psi (2x normal pressure).
