Default fuel issue

Alright y'all, I drive a 1991 Cherokee Laredo. 4.0 h/o. Ive been having an issue with putting gas in my rig. When I go to fill her up, it always stops at 3/4 or less and won't let me put any more in. What are your thoughts? Please and thanks!

Are you going off the guage or how many actual gallons being put in?

Well my gauge was on empty and I went and tried to fill it up tonight and it only put 14 gallons in. Its a 20 gallon tank. I'm wondering if I still have a quarter tank when it says empty

Could be that your gauge is off. Try this: Get a 5 gallon gas can, fill it, and go for a ride. See how far you get before it runs dry. Yes, deliberately run out of gas. That's what the 5 gallon can is for - so you can get to the next gas station. Keep track of your mileage from the time you run out until you fill up. You should learn a lot from this exercise.

I thought about doing this, just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas first. Thanks!

This is one of the very first things that I do when I get a new vehicle. I fill it up, run it dry and carry a 5-gal. can with me so that I can see just how many miles I can get on a tank and to check the gas gauge for accuracy. I NEVER trust a gauge that I haven't tested.
