I just bought a 93 cherokee for my stepson. It runs great but the fuel guage works backwards. The previous owner said he had the guages worked on and it works backwards now... He was clueless.
What do I need to check?
Could it be in the guage or in the sending unit?
I eventually want to replace the idiot light cluster with a guage cluster.
Thx-Ace

Where is the ground wire for the guage?
I just changed out the fuel pump/sending unit and there is no way to wire it backwards.
Thx-Ace

The guy I bought it from had different names.
E = excellent
F = F...ed
Anyway I am sure it is in the instrument panel. Any idea?

I really dont think its in the gauge itself, as they are pretty basic and the wires just go to the cluster, not specifically to the gas guage, this is why when you swap from an idiot light cluster with the giant fuel gauge to the gauged cluster with the tiny fuel gauge, you dont have to switch any wires at the cluster.
(ofcourse you gotta cahnge the temp and oil sending units but this is a different topic)
I'm gonna x2 on crossed wires or a bad ground.

I got the fuel pump for MY 95 xj from our 92 parts xj. The pump assembly is different but they worked fine. The guage works great!
The fuel sending unit (part of the assembly) I took out of my 95 is impossible to wire up backwards unless you cut the wires and spliced them backwards. I can't look at the one from my 92 because it is in the tank
but I think it was the same way. On the 95 there is a short ground wire that plugs into the sender and a long wire that comes out of the sender and plugs into the wiring harness.
Now it would be easy to cross the fuel pump and sending unit wires but nothing would work if you cross wired them!
