Default fuel guage reading seems to be off?

So the gas light came on today on the way home from work... i put 15.2 gallons into it.. and she was topped off...

but the strange thing is... i thought the xj had a 20 gallon tank.. where is my other five gallons?

im pretty sure the sending unit is just off... but these are no longer available as a replacement part (that i can find)

just trying to think about what i can do? remove sending unit and diagnose? seems like alot of trouble...

In the post updates, its all in the fuel pump assembly, and doesn't come as a separate unit, IIRC. Not sure for the '96. I think you have the fuel pump assembly 'at the front' of the tank, if so, its a lot easier to swap.
But if that is your only issue, I would not bother.

Do you have any other gauge issues atm?

yeah to be honest I do... voltage gauge seems to read a little low... my voltage tester will read on the money at around 14.1v, but the guage will show just at 13.6v...

If i turn the AC and headlights on... she will show barely above 12v... But i know its actually charging..

and the fuel pump is not an assembly... the fuel pump is purchased separate.. the sending unit is separate... kind of sucks..

i keep trying to find a used one off of ebay... but jesus no one can get the listings right..

year model fitment is wrong... and even going as far as to list a "grand cherokee xj"

i would hate to order something without knowing if its right...

and since you cannot get this part anymore... i don't mind ordering it and putting it in the garage parts bin for a while until i need it

the stupid thing is I haven't, and my wife's uncle is a Chrysler service provider...

I have been searching the web for a fitment guide for the fuel pump sending units... nothing really coming up unless I'm missing it.. I didnt think that they would have used too many different styles over the years... but I am coming up with ebay listing like 87-95 93-95

Im pretty much assuming they are as stupid as me when it comes to what they are looking at LOL

this looks promising and as soon as the guy will answer me back and verify exactly what it came out of... ill buy it

Let me know how it goes for you... My fuel light comes on at a quarter of a tank. My gauge also seems to "stick".. Like whenever I drive home from school. Say I start with a half tank of gas. I'll get on the freeway and the needle doesn't move noticeably until I get off the freeway and then it pretty much immediately goes straight to a quarter tank... I can literally watch the needle move. It's sad..

wow... well it seems after more reading and finding some forum posts around here and different others..

that the 96 was pretty much a 1 year part before a redesign in 97...

and it looks like that ebay listing IS the right one..

The '96 was indeed a bit of a bastard year, with some members finding both 95 as well as 97 parts in their rig.

with the needle actually seeing move down, that could well be accurate haha.
The reason why I asked is, I recently came across some info that the NSS (of all things) might be playing a part in that (the other gauge issues)....will have to read more on that, but pretty sure it was that...
